Writer and photographer based in western North Carolina

Hi there! I’m Robert Alan Grand, a writer, photographer, and curator based in Asheville, NC.

My writings on art and culture have been featured in various publications, including Art in America, The Bitter Southerner, Garden & Gun, Oxford American, and Burnaway, where I currently serve as the Carolinas Editor-at-Large. My feature essay on the Brasstown Carvers was named a Longreads Editors' Pick, and I am a 2025 recipient of the Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant.

Raised in Greenville, South Carolina, I have a BFA in Photography from Watkins College of Art in Nashville, TN. After graduating, I moved to Queens, New York, and from 2014 to 2019, I was the co-founder and co-director of Kimberly-Klark, an interdisciplinary project space in Ridgewood.

Keep up with my work by following me on Instagram and subscribing to my newsletter.
